From time to time, we hear people say that using an online wish list like Giftster takes all the surprise out of gift giving. I can’t help but think that’s farther from the truth. No matter how well you know someone, it’s always nice to know that your gift is really going to hit the target, especially when it’s just a little something.
Show of hands – how many people have a drawer, shelf, closet, etc. filled with random things people have given them because they were just being nice? I only have two hands and they’d both be straight up in the air. The thought, of course, counts and I am appreciative that people thought of me, but at the same time, the idea of re-purposing or having to clear away all these thoughtful gifts that I’m never going to use gives me a headache.
It makes me wonder how many people I’ve given headaches to by just trying to be thoughtful as well.
One of my favorite “something little and special” to give is a food item: candy, coffee, tea, cookies, etc. It’s consumable, it usually doesn’t take up too much space, and, if it’s the right type of item, makes the person smile, which is my ultimate goal. But this is much more difficult to do for some people I know than others.
Take my best friend for instance.
I can’t just go out and buy any type of edible treat because she has a corn allergy. Even a beautiful fruit bouquet is out of the question as many times the produce is sprayed with a product that has an item that derives from corn in it. For her in particular, I need an updated “favorite things” list on Giftster. That way, I know I can give her something that won’t set off her allergy and she’ll appreciate even more because I took the extra time to learn what things she really likes.
