General

Does Giftster cost anything?
No. Giftster online and mobile are absolutely free. If you’d like to pay us anyway, arrangements can be made.

Do I have to register to use Giftster?
No. If you’d like to take Giftster for a test drive, you can without creating an account. Individual lists can be created from the home page by clicking the test drive button. Bookmark or save the URL for future reference. But we know you’ll love Giftster so much that you’ll want to set up your free account right away.

What are the benefits of registering?
When you register with Giftster, you can create groups, set up a personalized events calendar, view lists from others in your group and build your shopping list as well as create and manage your own wish lists.

Is my information safe?
Yes. Giftster spells out how we protect your information in our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. See the links at the bottom of the website or on the bottom of the registration page on mobile.

Is Giftster safe for my kids to use?
Yes. Giftster is safe for people of all ages. Only people included in your group can create lists and events viewable by your children that are part of your group. However, children under the age of 13 must have adult supervision when using most websites according to federal rules.
Not sure you want your child to use their own account? We’ve got you covered. Create a child account that you can manage from your own account. You can set up child accounts for as many children as you’d like on the my lists page.

Can this be used by others not in the United States?
Yes. Giftster can be used to share gift lists with friends and loved ones around the world. Last we checked we had active members in 27 countries! They only need an Internet connection. The price field accepts any currency symbol, and fetch is not fussy - add items from any website in any country. Giftster itself is in English, but your lists can be in your local language.

Can I use Giftster all year for any occasion?
Absolutely! It’s not just for birthdays and holidays. Giftster is a lifetime gift registry you can set up once and use forever to give and get the gifts that matter most, including housewarming parties, graduation, college registries, baby and wedding registries.

Can I use Giftster from my smart phone and/or tablet?
You bet! Take Giftster on the go with the free app for iPhones in
The App Store, Giftster for Android in Google Play, or mobile site http://m.giftster.com for all small screen browsers. Giftster.com works great from iPads and other tablets as well.

Where can I see the recent activity of others in my group?
Click or tap on the “my news feed” link to see if others in your group have recently updated their lists, important events that are coming up, and group invitations. You’ll also see any reminders people have sent you about your own lists.

I have an idea for a Giftster feature or tool. How do I let you know?
We love hearing from our members who think “hey – I’d like Giftster to do THAT.” If you have an idea,
share it here or email us at feedback@giftster.com

Does Santa Claus use Giftster?
Santa has had a great system in place for several years that works well for him and his elves. While he uses Giftster to find the perfect gift for Mrs. Claus, it’s best to visit with him or send him a letter with your child’s Christmas gift wishes.

I’m having trouble with the app or the website. Who can I contact?
We’re sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Thank you for giving us a chance to help. Please fill out the
contact form or email support@Giftster.com.

Giftster just isn’t for me. How do I close my account?
Was it something we said or did? We hate to see you go. But, if you must, log on to your Giftster account at giftster.com (not mobile) and click on Settings. You will see a link to close your account. If you could, please take a moment to let us know why you’re choosing to close your account. It helps us break the news of your leaving to our boss (and improve Giftster).

My List

How do I manage items on my list?
To add an item, click on Add Item, fill in one or more of the fields you’d like to display and press save. Only the Gift Name is a required field. Fill out as little or as much as you like.

The magic way to add an item is with Fetch. Select Add Item, then copy and paste a web link from the site you are shopping into the web link field and press Fetch. Giftster smartly analyzes the page of your item's website and fills out your entire item, including picking what Giftster thinks is the best picture for it. If you want a different image, delete the image and choose add an image for a powerful way to add an image from anywhere on the web, or Facebook, or with a URL, or a local drive or your phone's camera!.

You can also use the Add to Giftster button service to add items while shopping online.

Want to copy an item from one of your lists to another? Expand an existing item and select the copy item button. Item Copy does not copy any existing hidden reserves or purchases on the item to the destination list.

Does Giftster have a browser button to make adding to my list easier?
Yes. Install the Add to Giftster button to your browser favorite bookmarks bar to make adding to your wish list easier while you shop online. Visit the
Add to Giftster Button page to learn more and add it to your web browser or as a Chrome or Safari extension. Be sure you have also tried the fetch button, too, found on the add item page on the website and mobile apps.

Can I make more than one list for myself?
Sure. Why not? Giftster is a great way to organize your wishes when you have many gift ideas to list. For example, you can have a list devoted to cooking items and another to books. Choose to make a list private and use it just for your own reference. No one can view the items listed unless you make the list shared or public.

How do I add a web link to an item on my wish list?
Know the URL where others can purchase an item? Copy and paste it into the web link box and press fetch. Giftster will magically pull the details for the item (including the best image if available) into your wish list.

How do I share a list with just one group?
If you’re setting up a new list, and you belong to multiple groups (you power user!), you’ll have an opportunity to choose which groups your list is shared with. The default is to share with all your groups. If you prefer not to share the list with a certain group, when first making your list, or by accessing the privacy settings for your list, under shared privacy choose which groups can see this list. Remove the X next to the name of a group to deselect it. Make sure to press the “save settings” button when you’re finished.

If you want to change this with a list you have already created, click the set privacy link at the top of the list. There, you can deselect any group your list is shared with by clicking the red X next to the group name.

Can I add a cash gift or gift card as an item on my list?
Yes. Whether you’re saving up for that special something or just really like one particular store, you can add cash or gift cards to your list. You may also add a charity you support and request gift givers make a donation in your name.

Tip: To ask for 100 dollars, for example, set up a 20 dollar item, and ask for 5 of them, then different people can reserve commitments to fund your gift. Giftster doesn't handle the money, just have them give it to you directly. Don't spend it all in one place.

Besides my wish lists, how can I let others in my group know my gift preferences?
Click on the new profile link in the my gift preferences box located just under your wish lists. There, you can document clothing sizes, color preferences, personal interests and even what not to give you. You may also choose to list your mailing address for family living abroad or for a wedding or baby registry so they can mail gifts to you. All information here is optional and you can choose to add as much or as little as you’d like.

If I see an item on someone else’s list that I’d like, can I add it to my list?
Yes. Just click on the star next to the item, choose the list you’d like it added to, press Save and Giftster will add a copy of the same item to your wish list.

How can I tell others what gift items I’m most excited about, or group items on my list?
Use Giftster’s star rankings to tell others how much you’ll light up with certain gift ideas. Choose rankings from one to five stars (1 star meaning of course you like it; 5 meaning you may just do cartwheels when you open it). Giftster automatically sorts your list by star rankings. When first creating your list Giftster doesn't do the final sort until you refresh/reload the page.

How do I clean up my wish list after I’ve received a gift?
While viewing your wish list, click on the item you received. This will open up the editing for the item. Simply click on the I Got This button and the item will be archived on your I Got This list. To view this list, click on the link located at the bottom of your my lists column (you’ll see it after you’ve added an item to the list).

How can I tell people where to buy items on my list?
Here’s one of the biggest pros of Giftster: you can list absolutely any gift idea from any source to your wish list. If your gift can be found online, you can enter the web address in the “web link” box and press Fetch to auto fill your item. If your gift can be found at a regular brick-and-mortar store, you can type in the store name and/or location in the “where to buy” box. While viewing someone else's list on Shop for Others, click check Amazon to slide out up to 5 match recommendations to the item name from Amazon.

How can I create wish lists for my kids?
When in your “my lists” area, scroll down to locate the
“my child accounts” section on the lower left. There, you can create lists for one or more children or other family members. A Giftster child account shows up in your group as an individual member just below your name, with their own lists and gift preferences but under your account's email address. You can manage the child accounts just as you manage your own.

Can I start lists for others in my family?
Yes. There are a few ways to accomplish this.
Your first option is to use the
“child accounts” feature as detailed in the answer just above this one. The person(s) will already be linked up to your groups so nothing else will need to be done. This is a great option if you’ll need to manage the family member’s list for them. Child accounts aren't just for children, we call them that because the account is a "child" to the parent account.

Your second option is to create a separate account for each family member (see the tip below). Once the person’s account is created, simply include them in your group and set their account so the first page they see is either their list or the lists of others in your group. Click on “Settings” to choose your account default login page. This is the better option if the person whose list you’re setting up would like to log in and control it themselves in the future.

TIP: You don’t need to wait for people you invite to respond in order to set up your group. Register each group member using their email address and a simple password like 1234 – they can change it later. When logged into each new account, request to be added to your group. Log back into your own account, accept all the requests and you’re all connected. Make sure to tell each group member about their account and how to access it, then start sharing wish lists and events.

How can I share my list(s) with others?
If people are in your group, all they have to do is click “shop for others” and choose your name to see your lists.

To share your list with people who are not using Giftster, click the “Share” link from your list. You can choose to share the link by email (Outlook or Apple Mail) or copy the permanent link to your list for sharing on Facebook, Twitter or by webmail. Important: Make your list privacy public when sharing links to make it easy for your visitors to shop your list.

Finally, with Public lists you can choose to have your list link displayed in Giftster Member Search and in Google and other search engine results, so your lists are discover able that way too if you like. This option is set on the Set Privacy page on giftster.com, (not on the mobile apps).

Can I ask someone to be more specific about a list item without them knowing it’s me asking?
Send anonymous list reminders to ask questions about an item’s size, color, or to just remind someone to update their gift list. Click the “Remind to update this list” link. We’ve filled out the email for just a general reminder but you can type in any question you may have for the list maker. Send anonymously or you can choose to add your name. These links are located at the bottom of other people's lists and gift preference lists.

How can I make sure I buy someone the right item size or color?
When browsing a person’s wish list, you’ll see a link that says “Gift Preferences” under their name on the left side of the page. Click on this link to view the person’s preferences. And don’t forget to update your own gift preferences. Click on “My Lists” and your gift preference link will be at the bottom of your list of lists.

Will I be able to see if someone marks an item reserved or purchased on my list?
No, you won't. It will stay a secret to you until you receive the gift. This may disappoint you if you're the type who likes to shake their gifts and guess what's inside. We promise, the surprise will be worth it.

Inviting Others & My Groups

How can I invite others to my group?
Once you’ve created a group, you can invite others to join your group and view your lists, and you can view theirs. Every member of your group can view and shop each other's lists and preferences, including yours, so everyone will think you are a hero for creating this group.

In the Invite Members box on the my groups page, enter the name and email addresses of each person, one per row and press save. Giftster sends an email invitation to everyone you’ve entered. On the web, there is a handy tool to display your address books from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, Apple Mail and others for one click adding. On iOS and Android mobile apps you can select with one touch from your address books.

If you’ll need to manage a family member or child’s account, use the
“child accounts” setting in your account.

How do I view the lists of others in my group?
Click “shop for others.” You’ll see the names of everyone in your group listed to the left. Click on the name of the person you’d like to shop for and you’ll see a list of their gift lists. Click on the list you’d like to view and then start making your shopping list!

How do I find a specific group?
Click on “Member Search” to search for Giftster members by name or email address. Enter the name or email address and press “Go”. When the search results display, click on “View Details” to see the member’s groups and public lists and gift preferences.

How can I join a group?
You’ve done a group search and you see the group for your family or friends that you’d like to join. Click on the “Request Membership” link and Giftster will send an email request to the group creator for their approval. To complete the request you will either login to your existing account or create an account.

Can I join more than one group?
As long as the group creators approve your membership request into their groups, you may join as many as you’d like. But remember – it may cause your shopping list to increase!

How do I remove someone from my group?
View your group and click “Remove” next to the name of the person you’d like deleted from the group. They may be saddened by the email they receive announcing the decision.

Browsing and Reserving Gifts

How will I know what someone would like the most?
Items can be ranked using one to five stars. If you’re looking to hit it out of the park, give a five-star gift!

How can I tell if a gift has already been purchased?
Each item has a status next to it: Available, Reserved or Purchased. If the item shows Available, at least one of the quantity requested is available for you to reserve and buy. If it is marked Reserved, someone else has it reserved for purchase. If it is marked Purchased, the item has been purchased. Great way to avoid giving duplicate gifts.

How can I make sure someone else doesn’t purchase a gift I’ve already purchased for someone?
To mark an item Reserved, click the lock icon next to the item you intend to purchase. This will lock it in for you. If you decide not to purchase that item after all, unlock it by clicking the release icon and it will become available to others. Once you’ve purchased the gift, click on the present icon from either your shopping list or shop for others page. The recipient (list maker) cannot see this information so they won’t know what’s been reserved or purchased.

How can I print a list of items I've reserved to purchase?
Ready to shop? Click the “My Shopping List” link to see all the items you’ve reserved. Then click “Print List” and you can print everything on one page.

Is there a record of the gifts I’ve marked purchased?
Yes. Under the reserved items on the “My Shopping List” page you will see a record of items you’ve previously marked purchased.

How do I buy an item off of someone's list?
Look for the website button in the item description, if provided by the list maker, to visit the store where the item is available. Or purchase it wherever you like. Giftster does not handle the actual gift transaction, we keep track of who bought what so everyone is happy. If there is no store location or web link noted, expand the item and choose find it on amazon to automatically search for the item on Amazon and slide out 5 matches. If you're still unsure where to find the item, use the "Remind [this person] to update this list" link at the bottom of the list to ask a question about the item (don't worry - you can remain anonymous if you choose). After you've made your purchase, mark the item as purchased by you so no one else gives the same gift.

Can I draw names or do a Secret Santa with my Giftster group?
Yes! Giftster does the group part and organizes the wish lists and preferences for you, and then you can add a Secret Santa draw to your group. Create your group of three or more members, get them approved, then ask Giftster to secretly pick and announce the names. Learn more - see the link at the top of the page next to the login link. Everyone can check Giftster to find just the right gift for the name they drew.

Will the list owner see if I mark an item reserved or purchased?
List owners will not see which items you marked reserved or purchased on their lists, but others shopping the list will, to prevent duplicates. So your gift choice remains a surprise for the list owner. The list owner can create lists under child accounts, and those we do show the status to the list owner, since they are managing these lists, often for kids. The list owner would be able to see that grandparents or aunts and uncles have purchased something off those lists. But, for example, if you mark something as purchased on your cousin's list, your cousin won't see it and know that you bought it. You can tell if a list is a child account – the member name is indented below the parent of the account.

Drawing names out of a hat is also sometimes called a Kris Kringle or a secret santa organizer, or a Christmas gift exchange.

My Events

How do I add events to my calendar?
Log into your account and click on “My Events.” Click on “Add Event” to add a special occasion to your list: birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, baptisms, house warming parties and more. Select "annual" setting for birthdays.

How do I see events from others in my group?
Never forget a birthday or special occasion again! While in “My Events,” click on “Group Events” to see all upcoming occasions for your family and friends. Note: The dates in Events do not include the birthday entered as part of signing up for Giftster. Enter your birthday in Events if you want it to show up there.
